SUMMARY:Candlemas: Soup Supper\, Candlelight Procession\, and Holy Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 2nd is the Feast of the Presentation\, also known as Candlemas. This feast day comes forty days after Christmas and commemorates the presentation of baby Jesus and the purification of his mother Mary in the Jerusalem temple forty days after his birth. At his presentation\, the baby Jesus was greeted by Simeon (whose prayer upon encountering Jesus became the basis for the canticle nunc dimmittis (see page 120 in your Book of Common Prayer) and by the prophet Anna. Over time\, this celebration came to include the lighting and blessing of candles\, remembering Simeon’s prayer that Jesus is “a light to enlighten the nations.”  \nThis year for Candlemas\, join St. James’ in our Parish Hall for a 5:45 pm soup supper followed by a candlelight procession to the church for a special evening Holy Eucharist! The Eucharist will take place at approximately 6:30 p.m. \nRSVP requested (but not required) so Mtr. Meredith knows how much soup to make. You can RSVP here or to Dyan in the parish office.

A festive coffee hour will follow in the parish house. \nAbout the Sunday 10 am service: Join us Sundays at 10:00 a.m. for a celebration of Holy Eucharist (Communion). DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a worship service (including celebration of Holy Communion) honoring Eleanor Roosevelt on Saturday\, December 10th—the United Nations Day of Human Rights—at 10:00 a.m. This service will feature Mrs. Roosevelt’s favorite prayer as well as prayers based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights she was instrumental in creating. \nThis event will be held in St. James’ Episcopal Chapel\, 10 East Market Street\, Hyde Park. \nMrs. Roosevelt was a devoted Christian\, Episcopalian\, and member of St. James’ Church. The 246th Convention of the Diocese of New York (November 2022) passed a resolution authorizing and encouraging commemorations of Eleanor Roosevelt on Human Rights Day. Such “local observance” is part of The Episcopal Church’s process for the addition of a saint to the Church’s official calendar of observances.
